I changed the schedule so he could keep seeing me
I also had an affair with one of our regular customers.
His name was Brandon. He came in for manicures because his job required him to meet clients and keep his hands presentable. In the beginning, he booked with whoever was available. He was friendly, tipped well, and never caused problems.
Then he started paying more attention to me.
I work out several mornings a week and take pride in staying fit. Brandon began asking about my gym routine whenever he saw me. He complimented my figure more directly than most customers would, but he always said it quietly so nobody else could hear.
I knew the comments were personal. I should have told him to stop.
Instead, I enjoyed them.
My husband rarely commented on how I looked anymore. We were not miserable, but everything between us had become practical. We talked about work, groceries, repairs, and family plans. Brandon made me feel attractive instead of responsible for something.
Soon, he started calling the salon to ask which days I was working.
Since I was the manager, the receptionist did not think it was strange. Brandon would say he needed my help with a service question or wanted me there in case there was a scheduling issue. Then he would choose an appointment during my shift and spend more time talking to me than to the technician doing his nails.
I began making small changes to keep our paths crossing.
If he wanted a late appointment, I stayed later. If he came on my shorter day, I found a reason to handle paperwork. Once, I moved another customer to a different time so Brandon could have the last appointment before closing.
That was not fair to my staff or the customer, but I told myself it was harmless because nobody knew why I had done it.
The relationship became physical after we met for drinks away from the salon. I told my husband I was attending a staff dinner. After that, Brandon and I found excuses to meet whenever our schedules allowed.
Keeping the affair hidden at work was harder than meeting outside.
Brandon became possessive about my time. If I was busy with an employee or talking to another male customer, he would become quiet and leave without saying much. Then he would message me later and ask why I had ignored him.
I started feeling trapped by something I had helped create.
The turning point came when one of my technicians asked why Brandon received better appointment times than long-term customers. She had lost a good booking because I had changed the schedule for him. I gave her a weak explanation, and she looked at me like she did not believe it.
I had always expected my staff to be fair and professional. Now I was using my position to protect an affair.
I ended things with Brandon and told the receptionist not to discuss my schedule with him anymore. He tried booking twice after that, but when he learned I would not be there, he canceled both appointments.
My husband still does not know.
I used to think the affair was separate from my job and marriage. It was not. I lied at home, showed favoritism at work, and put employees in uncomfortable situations just so one man could keep showing up during my shift.
Brandon may have been attracted to my body, but I was the one who kept rearranging my life to hold his attention.
