My early workouts became the lie I used every morning

My early workouts became the lie I used every morning
My name is Katie. I am 36, work as a nail tech in Birmingham, and have been married for eight years.

About a year ago, I started going to the gym before work. I spend most of my day sitting at a nail table, so my back was bothering me and I wanted more energy. My husband supported it. He even bought me new workout shoes and said he was proud that I was taking care of myself.

The trainer who usually opened the gym was younger than me. His name was Tyler.

In the beginning, he only corrected my form and showed me how to use equipment I had been avoiding. He was patient without making me feel inexperienced. After a few weeks, he started noticing changes in my body and telling me that my hard work was showing.

Those comments affected me more than they should have.

At home, my husband rarely complimented me anymore. I knew eight years of marriage would not feel like the beginning forever, but I missed feeling attractive. Tyler noticed my hair, my progress, and even the days when I seemed tired. Around him, I did not feel like someone rushing between work, laundry, bills, and dinner. I felt like a woman he wanted to look at.

I began arriving earlier than necessary.

Sometimes I had already finished my workout but stayed to talk while he organized equipment. I changed my schedule so I could train when he was there. My husband thought I had become disciplined. The real reason was that I wanted Tyler’s attention before starting another long day at the salon.

The first time we met outside the gym, we got coffee after a workout. I told myself it was harmless because we were in public. I did not tell my husband, which should have told me everything I needed to know.

Coffee led to private messages. Then one morning, instead of going directly to work, Tyler and I crossed the line.

After that, the gym became part of the cover. I left home in workout clothes, carried my gym bag, and returned looking exactly as my husband expected. Some mornings I actually exercised. Other mornings I barely touched the equipment.

The affair continued for several months.

Tyler made me feel desirable, but he did not know much about my real life. He knew the version of me who had energy at six in the morning and could leave before anything became complicated. He did not see me exhausted after a Saturday shift or worried about salon expenses.

The turning point came when my husband surprised me at the gym.

He wanted to bring me breakfast before work. I was not there. Tyler and I had left to get coffee across town, and my phone was on silent.

I made up a story about changing gyms for the morning because ours was crowded. My husband accepted it, but watching him hand me the breakfast he had bought made me feel sick.

I ended the affair that week.

Tyler said he thought I was unhappy enough to leave my marriage. I had never promised that, but I understood how my actions had given him that impression.

My husband still does not know the full truth. I changed gyms and told him I needed a fresh routine.

He thinks those early mornings helped me become healthier. In reality, I used them to hide something that damaged every part of me I had been trying to improve.
