She kept booking pedicures after one unsteady morning
My name is Kevin. I am 27, Vietnamese, and I have worked as a nail tech in Austin for three years.

I met Emily at the gym before work. I usually went early because the salon could keep me busy until evening, and I knew I would not exercise after sitting at a nail table all day.

Emily was using a machine near me when her foot slipped as she stepped away. She reached out without thinking and grabbed my arm to keep herself from falling.

She was embarrassed, but she was not hurt. I asked if she was okay, and we talked for a few minutes while she caught her breath. She was 30, white, and had recently started coming to that gym before her job.

We introduced ourselves, but neither of us asked for a phone number. I told her I worked at a nail salon when she noticed my hands and asked why my nails looked cleaner than hers.

I expected to see her again at the gym.

Instead, she appeared at my salon a few days later.

Emily walked in and requested a pedicure with Kevin. When I came to the front, she said she had remembered the name of the salon from our conversation and found it online.

She also admitted that she had never planned to get a pedicure that week.

I laughed, but I stayed professional. Her feet actually needed some basic care, so the appointment was not completely unnecessary. We talked about Austin traffic, workout routines, and how difficult it was to keep a regular schedule when work got busy.

Before she left, she booked another appointment with me.

Emily came back sooner than most customers would. She chose a different polish color, but we spent more time talking than discussing her nails. She asked how I had started working in the industry and what my family thought about me being a male nail tech.

I liked her directness. She did not treat my job like something strange, and she never made jokes about a man doing pedicures.

After several appointments, I started looking forward to seeing her name on my schedule. Still, I was careful. Customers sometimes become friendly because nail services are personal and people talk while sitting together. I did not want to mistake comfort for romantic interest.

My coworkers noticed that Emily always requested me, but nobody made a big issue out of it. Austin is full of people with unusual schedules, so a customer booking early appointments was not suspicious by itself.

The situation became clearer when Emily asked if I was going to keep making her pay for pedicures every time she wanted to talk to me.

I told her I had been wondering the same thing, but I did not feel right asking her out while she was sitting in my chair.

She said she had come to the salon because waiting for another gym accident seemed unreliable.

We met for tacos after one of my shifts. Talking away from the salon felt different because I was not checking the clock or preparing for my next customer. Emily was funny, confident, and easier to understand when neither of us had a professional reason to be polite.

We continued seeing each other for several weeks before calling it dating. I wanted to make sure the connection was real outside the gym and salon.

Emily still books pedicures with me sometimes, but now she waits until she actually needs one. She says grabbing my arm kept her from falling that morning.

Finding my salon was the part that changed both of our lives.
