Nail Tech Stories · San Jose, CA

We kept our relationship quiet for months
"My name is Jason. I am 31, Vietnamese, and have been working as a nail tech in San Jose for several years. I spend most mornings at the gym and have trained in karate for a long time. Staying active has always been part of my routine, especially because nail work means sitting for hours every day.

My girlfriend is Linda.

She is 47, Vietnamese, divorced, and owns the salon where I work.

When we first met, our relationship was completely professional. Linda expected a lot from everyone on the team, including me. She was fair with scheduling, never played favorites, and always reminded us that customers came first.

Over time, we started talking more after work.

Sometimes we stayed late because the salon was busy. Other nights we ordered dinner while finishing inventory or preparing supplies for the next day. Those conversations slowly became the part of the day I looked forward to most.

A few months later, I asked if she would like to have dinner somewhere that wasn't the salon.

She hesitated before saying yes.

Linda admitted she liked me too, but she was worried about what people would think. She was sixteen years older than I was, she was the owner, and she had already gone through a difficult divorce. She said people would probably assume I was dating her for money or that she was taking advantage of someone younger.

I understood why she was afraid.

We decided to keep the relationship private.

At work, nothing changed. She still corrected my mistakes, assigned customers the same way she always had, and never gave me special treatment. I actually appreciated that because the last thing I wanted was for coworkers to think I received better appointments because of our relationship.

Keeping the secret was harder than I expected.

We never arrived together. We never left together. If we wanted dinner, one of us drove separately and met somewhere else. At the salon, we spoke exactly the way we did before we started dating.

One technician even joked that Linda was harder on me than everyone else.

I laughed because, in many ways, she was.

The turning point came when a coworker asked me if I was seeing anyone. Before I could answer, another technician jokingly said I probably wanted someone younger who enjoyed going to the gym as much as I did.

I glanced toward Linda without thinking.

Nobody noticed except her.

That evening she told me she was tired of feeling like our relationship had to stay hidden forever. She said she understood people might talk about the age difference, but she did not want to live according to rumors that had not even happened yet.

A few weeks later, we told the senior staff together.

The reactions were much calmer than either of us expected. A few people were surprised, but most simply asked whether we planned to keep work and personal life separate.

We both said yes.

That has been our rule ever since.

At the salon, she is still my owner, and I am still her employee. We avoid public displays of affection, and we make sure every technician is treated fairly.

People may notice our age difference before they notice anything else.

What they do not see is the respect that grew between us long before we ever became a couple. That was the part worth protecting, and it turned out we did not have to hide it as long as we thought.
