The only person who refused to believe the rumors was her husband
My name is Mai. I'm Vietnamese, and I've been working as a nail tech in San Jose for almost four years.

People think working in a nail salon is mostly about nails, but after spending six days a week together, everyone notices changes in routines long before anyone talks about them.

Our owner was married, and for years her husband would occasionally stop by the salon. He was always polite, brought coffee for the staff once in a while, and never acted like someone who distrusted his wife.

Then things slowly started changing.

Her husband's older brother began visiting the salon more often. At first, it seemed completely normal because they were family. He would stop in near closing, help move a few boxes, or wait while the owner finished paperwork.

None of us questioned it.

After a while, however, the timing became too consistent.

Whenever he came by, the owner suddenly had another reason to stay late. The rest of us would finish cleaning our stations, count our tips, and head home while they remained inside with the lights still on.

One evening I forgot my sweater in the break room.

When I came back about twenty minutes later, his truck was still outside. The front door was locked, but I could see lights coming from the office area. I knocked softly, and after a short pause the owner opened the door.

She looked surprised to see me.

I grabbed my sweater, apologized for interrupting, and left without asking any questions.

Later, I found out I was not the only one who had noticed similar things.

Another technician had returned for her phone charger on a different night and also found them still inside together. Someone else mentioned seeing them leave in separate cars but only after spending a long time inside the salon after everyone else had gone home.

Eventually, almost the entire staff believed the owner was secretly involved with her husband's older brother.

Nobody talked about it in front of customers.

The conversations only happened during lunch breaks or after closing, and even then people kept their voices low. None of us wanted to become the source of gossip outside the salon.

The difficult part was watching her husband continue visiting the shop.

He greeted everyone with the same warm smile and occasionally brought food for the staff. A few employees hinted that he should pay more attention to what was happening, but he always brushed off any concern.

He trusted his wife completely.

One coworker finally told me she had tried to warn him in a careful way without making direct accusations. According to her, he simply said people misunderstood close family relationships and refused to believe anything inappropriate could be happening.

After that, nobody brought it up again.

Whether he truly believed nothing was wrong or simply chose not to face the possibility, I honestly cannot say.

I only know what I personally witnessed and what nearly everyone working in the salon quietly observed over time.

The atmosphere at work changed because of it.

People stopped volunteering to stay late. Conversations became shorter whenever the owner's personal life came up. Everyone focused on customers and tried to avoid becoming involved in something that clearly extended far beyond the salon.

To people walking through our front door, we looked like any other busy nail salon in San Jose.

Those of us working there every day knew there was a secret hanging over the shop, and the saddest part was that the one person who seemed completely unaware was the husband everyone genuinely liked.
