Nail Tech Stories · Garden Grove, CA

What started as helping with errands became my real life

What started as helping with errands became my real life
My name is Danny. I’m 34, Vietnamese, and I’ve worked as a nail tech in Garden Grove for several years.

For the last seven months, I’ve been quietly dating my owner’s mother.

Her name is Linda. She’s 56, Vietnamese, and has been divorced for many years. If you met her for the first time, you probably wouldn’t think about her age. What stands out is her confidence. She walks into a room like she already knows exactly who she is, and that was what attracted me long before I admitted it to myself.

When I first met her, she occasionally stopped by the salon to visit her daughter.

Sometimes she brought homemade food for the staff. Other times she needed help carrying groceries or loading heavy boxes into her car. Since I was usually the one helping move supplies, I naturally offered to help her too.

That became our routine.

If she had a doctor's appointment and needed someone to lift something heavy afterward, I helped. If she bought plants for her backyard, I'd carry them into the house. We usually grabbed coffee afterward before I headed home.

At the time, I honestly thought I was just helping out.

During those drives, we talked about everything except romance. She told me stories about raising her daughter, rebuilding her life after her divorce, and learning to enjoy living alone instead of fearing it.

I found myself looking forward to those conversations more than anything else.

A few months later, she invited me over for dinner to thank me for helping her so often.

After dinner, neither of us seemed eager to leave the table. We kept talking until it was late, and before I left, she admitted she had started seeing me as more than just someone doing favors.

I felt exactly the same way.

We agreed to take things slowly.

The biggest concern wasn't the age difference. It was her daughter.

She owns the salon where I work, and we both worried about how she would react if she discovered we were dating. We decided to keep the relationship private until we were certain it had a future.

Her daughter still believes I help Linda because I'm being polite.

Whenever Linda stops by the salon, I carry things to her car just like I always have. From the outside, nothing looks unusual. Nobody realizes that most weekends we have dinner together or spend quiet evenings watching movies at her house.

Keeping the relationship hidden hasn't always been easy.

One afternoon, my owner thanked me for always looking after her mother. She said it gave her peace of mind knowing someone reliable was willing to help.

I smiled and thanked her, but inside I felt guilty for not telling her the truth.

Later that night, I mentioned the conversation to Linda.

She became quiet for a moment and said she hated the idea that her daughter believed our relationship was nothing more than kindness.

We agreed that we wouldn't keep the secret forever.

When the time feels right, we'll tell her together instead of allowing rumors or misunderstandings to do it for us.

Until then, we continue being careful.

Most people see a younger nail tech helping an older woman with errands.

What they don't see is that somewhere between grocery bags, coffee stops, and quiet dinners, I fell in love with someone whose confidence mattered far more to me than the number of birthdays she has celebrated.
