I spent years believing no man would ever choose someone my size
I'm 39 years old.

I'm a white American woman, and I own a nail salon in Savannah.

I've been plus-size for most of my adult life.

To be honest, dating has never been easy.

Most men noticed my thinner friends before they ever noticed me.

After enough disappointments, I convinced myself that romance just wasn't meant for someone who looked like me.

So I stopped trying.

About a year ago, I hired a Vietnamese nail technician named Tony.

He was hardworking, respectful, and customers loved him.

He never flirted.

He never crossed any boundaries.

He simply came to work every day with a smile.

Over time, we'd stay after closing to finish paperwork or count inventory.

We talked about our families, our childhoods, and how both of us had spent years putting work ahead of our personal lives.

One evening, after we locked the front door, he asked if I'd like to have dinner with him sometime.

I honestly thought he was joking.

I even laughed.

He looked at me and said,

I'm serious.

I said yes.

Our first date was simple.

No fancy restaurant.

No expensive gifts.

Just good food and easy conversation.

A few weeks later, I finally asked the question that had been bothering me.

I looked at him and said,

Can I ask you something without you getting offended?

He smiled and nodded.

I asked,

Don't you think I'm too big?

For a second he looked confused.

Then he laughed.

Not in a mean way.

In a surprised way.

He reached across the table, held my hand, and said something I'll never forget.

Who told you that you had to be skinny to be beautiful?

I admitted that most of my life made me believe it.

He smiled again.

Then he said,

Back home and even here, everyone has different tastes. Mine has always been plus-size women. That's simply what I'm attracted to.

I stared at him because I'd never heard a man say that to me before.

Not once.

He wasn't trying to flatter me.

He said it so casually, like he was telling me his favorite color.

For the first time in years, I stopped looking at myself through other people's eyes.

We've been together for almost a year now.

Customers still look surprised when they find out we're a couple.

Some people whisper.

Some people assume he must want something from me.

The funny thing is...

He had a good job before he met me.

He could work almost anywhere.

He chooses to stay because he says he loves both me and the life we're building together.

Sometimes the biggest change in your life isn't meeting someone new.

It's finally meeting someone who sees you the way you've never been able to see yourself.
