she hated her nails, refused to pay, then handed me a $50 in cash for tip

I've been doing nails for almost eight years.

I thought I'd seen everything.

Apparently, I was wrong.

One Friday afternoon a new customer came in asking for a full acrylic set.

She was friendly.

We laughed through the whole appointment.

She even showed me photos of her dog while I worked.

Almost two hours later, I finished.

I handed her the mirror.

Her smile disappeared.

"I don't like them."

I asked what she wanted changed.

She looked at every finger and finally said,

"I just don't think they're me."

I offered to reshape them.

She said no.

I offered to change the color.

She said no.

I even offered to remove everything and start over.

Still no.

Then she said something I'd never heard before.

"If I don't like the nails, I shouldn't have to pay."

I was completely speechless.

The salon owner came over.

After a long discussion, they decided not to argue with her.

The owner simply wanted to avoid making a scene in front of other customers.

The customer grabbed her purse and started walking toward the door.

I figured that was the end of it.

Then she suddenly turned around.

She walked back to me.

Reached into her wallet.

Pulled out two crisp bills.

"$50 cash."

She placed them in my hand.

She smiled and said,

"I didn't like the nails, but you worked really hard. None of this is your fault."

Then she walked out without paying for the service.

Everyone in the salon just stared at each other.

For about ten seconds nobody said a word.

Finally one of my coworkers whispered,

"So... did we just get robbed... or tipped?"

Even the owner started laughing.

To this day it's still one of the strangest experiences I've ever had.

I've had customers who loved their nails and left no tip.

I've had customers who complained and still paid.

But I've never met anyone else who refused to pay for the service while giving the nail tech a generous cash tip.

It still makes me laugh every time I think about it.
