I found out why my boss kept crying after everyone went home

My name is Jessica, and I have managed the same nail salon in Westminster, California, for six years.

Linda, the owner, is 42 and Vietnamese. She is usually calm, practical, and good at keeping her personal life separate from work.

That changed after Ryan joined the salon.

Ryan was 29, friendly, hardworking, and already married. He never acted inappropriate with Linda. From what I could see, he treated her like his boss and nothing more.

Still, I noticed Linda behaving differently around him.

She gave him the best station, remembered his favorite coffee, and became unusually quiet whenever he mentioned his wife.

Sometimes she watched him from the front desk when she thought no one was paying attention.

I did not ask questions because Linda had always respected my privacy, and I wanted to give her the same courtesy.

Then she started staying late after closing.

At first, she said she was finishing paperwork. But several times, I returned for something I had forgotten and found her sitting alone in the dark salon.

Her eyes were red, and she would quickly pretend she had allergies or was tired.

One evening, after the last employee left, Linda asked me to sit with her.

She started crying before she could explain anything.

Then she admitted she had fallen in love with Ryan.

She said she knew it was wrong because he had a wife. She had never told him, never touched him, and never planned to interfere with his marriage.

But seeing him every day was becoming painful.

I asked whether Ryan had any idea.

Linda said no.

She believed he only saw her as his employer, and she wanted to keep it that way.

What surprised me most was that she was not asking for help winning him over. She wanted advice on how to stop feeling something she knew she should not act on.

I told her she could not control every feeling, but she could control what she did with it.

She needed to stop giving Ryan special treatment and create some distance before the staff noticed.

Linda listened, but it was not easy for her.

A few weeks later, Ryan announced that he and his wife were expecting their first baby.

Everyone congratulated him.

Linda smiled, gave him a gift card, and finished the workday like normal.

After closing, I found her crying in the supply room.

She said she was happy for him, but the news finally made her understand that there was never going to be a place for her in his life.

Not long after that, Linda changed her schedule so she worked fewer shifts beside Ryan. She also stopped assigning him special appointments.

Ryan never seemed to notice the reason.

He still works at the salon, and Linda still treats him kindly, but the feeling between them exists only on her side.
