He came to my salon with perfectly normal nails
I met Jason at a car dealership.
He was Chinese American, and looking at the same SUV I was considering. Neither of us planned to buy that day, so we started joking about how the salesperson kept describing every feature as life-changing.
Jason asked whether I was replacing an old car. I told him mine still worked, but after years of driving to the salon in bad weather, I wanted something more reliable.
That was how he learned I did nails.
We talked for about twenty minutes before the salesperson returned. Jason and I separated without exchanging numbers.
I thought he was attractive, but I assumed it was only a friendly conversation between two people waiting around a dealership.
Four days later, Jason walked into my salon.
He asked for a manicure and requested me by name.
I recognized him immediately.
His nails were short, clean, and completely normal. I asked what kind of service he wanted.
He looked at his hands for a few seconds and said he was not sure because he had never gotten a manicure before.
That was when I understood he probably had another reason for coming.
During the appointment, we continued the conversation from the dealership. Jason asked whether I had bought the SUV. I told him I had decided to wait.
He said he had also left without buying anything.
Then I asked how he found my salon.
Jason admitted he remembered the salon name from my work jacket and searched for it online.
He said he had wanted to ask me out at the dealership but lost his chance when the salesperson returned.
I laughed and asked whether he had really booked a manicure just to finish the conversation.
He said yes.
Then he asked whether I wanted to have dinner with him after work.
I liked how honest he was, but I also wanted to keep things professional while he was sitting at my station. I told him to leave his number and let me decide after the appointment.
Jason agreed without making the situation awkward.
I texted him that evening.
We had dinner the following weekend and talked for almost three hours. He later admitted he had spent too much time reading about manicure services because he was afraid of ordering the wrong thing.
We started dating slowly.
Jason continued visiting the salon, but he stopped pretending his nails needed constant attention. Sometimes he only brought coffee and waited until I finished work.
We have been together for nine months now.
I eventually bought a different car, and Jason still has the same one he drove to the dealership that day.
He says neither of us found the vehicle we wanted.
I tell him we still left with something better.
He got my attention, and I got the only customer who came in hoping his manicure would lead to dinner.
