Nobody expected him to leave with her sister

My name is Tina. I’m Vietnamese, and I’ve been a nail tech in Tulsa for several years. When you work in the same salon every day, people eventually notice when something is wrong, even if nobody says it out loud.

Our owner, Jessica, always seemed to have a solid marriage. Her husband, Ryan, would stop by the salon once in a while to bring her lunch or help carry heavy boxes inside. They looked like a normal couple, and I never heard anyone question their relationship.

Jessica also had a younger sister named Ashley.

Ashley did not work at the salon, but she visited often. She would occasionally wait for Jessica after work, bring coffee, or help decorate before holidays. Everyone liked her because she was friendly and easy to talk to.

Over time, Ryan and Ashley started talking more.

At first, nobody thought anything of it. They were family, and Jessica trusted both of them. If the three of them were together, Ryan and Ashley would joke around while Jessica finished helping customers or handled paperwork.

Months later, I noticed Ashley had begun visiting even when Jessica was busy with appointments. Ryan also seemed to appear at the salon more frequently than before. Looking back, the signs were there, but none of us imagined where things were heading.

One Monday morning, Jessica came to work looking exhausted.

She gathered the staff before opening and told us she needed a few days to deal with a family emergency. She did not explain anything else. We respected her privacy and focused on getting through the day.

The truth came out gradually.

One of the senior technicians told me Ryan had confessed that he had fallen in love with Ashley. According to what Jessica later shared with a few of us, Ryan had been secretly talking with Ashley for months. Eventually, he convinced her to leave Oklahoma with him and start over in Colorado.

Neither of them told Jessica before they left.

She found out after discovering they had both disappeared on the same weekend. When she tried calling them, neither answered. Later, Ryan admitted they had left together.

The salon changed after that.

Jessica still opened the business every morning, but she was much quieter than before. She stopped talking about her personal life completely. Customers noticed she smiled less, but they had no idea what had happened behind the scenes.

The hardest part for me was watching people ask Jessica how her husband was doing.

She would politely change the subject or say he was out of town. I could tell she was trying to hold herself together while continuing to run the salon and take care of her employees.

Eventually, Ryan filed for divorce from Colorado.

Ashley never returned to Tulsa. As far as I know, they stayed together after moving. Whether they are still together today, I honestly do not know.

Jessica slowly rebuilt her routine. She threw herself into the salon, trained new employees, and focused on work. She never spoke badly about her sister in front of us. She simply stopped mentioning her altogether.

People often think the biggest problems in a nail salon come from difficult customers or busy weekends.

In our salon, the most painful story had nothing to do with nails. It came from a family that trusted each other until one decision changed every relationship they had.
