The real reason Michelle stopped scheduling Ryan to close
I had been managing Michelle’s salon in Tulsa for almost 6 years when she finally told me why things had become so tense between her and Ryan.
Michelle, 42, is Vietnamese and usually keeps her personal life separate from the salon. She is friendly with the staff, but she does not share much about her marriage or family problems. That is why I knew something was serious when she asked me to stay after everyone else had left.
Ryan, 29, had worked at the salon for a little over a year. He was dependable, good with customers, and willing to take late appointments. Michelle often scheduled him near the end of the day because he did not complain about closing duties.
Over time, I noticed that Michelle also started staying late more often. She would say she had paperwork to finish or supplies to organize. Sometimes I left while both of them were still there.
I did not think they were having an affair. As the manager, I was used to people becoming close from working long hours together. I assumed Michelle trusted Ryan because he worked hard.
Then their behavior changed.
Michelle stopped talking to him unless it was about customers. Ryan began asking me to approve schedule changes instead of going directly to her. When they were both working, the salon felt uncomfortable even though neither of them argued.
One afternoon, Ryan asked to leave early because Michelle’s husband had come into the parking lot. That caught my attention. Her husband had visited the salon many times before, and Ryan had never acted nervous around him.
A few days later, Michelle asked me to meet her in the supply room. She told me she and Ryan had been involved outside of work. She did not give me private details, and I did not ask for them. She said it had started with conversations after closing and later became an affair.
She also told me her husband had started asking questions. He had noticed that she was coming home later, checking her phone more often, and giving unclear answers about who was closing with her.
Michelle said she had already ended things with Ryan, but working together every day made the situation harder. Ryan was hurt and believed she was acting cold because she wanted to protect herself.
I told Michelle that ending the affair did not solve the workplace problem. She was still Ryan’s boss, and the staff had already noticed that his schedule was changing. Several of his regular closing shifts had been given to other technicians.
She asked me to handle Ryan’s schedule for a while so her decisions would not be based on fear or guilt. I agreed, but I made it clear that I would schedule him according to business needs, not to keep him away from her husband.
A week later, Ryan came to me and asked if Michelle was trying to force him out. I did not reveal what she had told me. I only said his hours would remain fair as long as his work stayed professional.
