My sister trusted me with the one secret I did not want

My sister trusted me with the one secret I did not want
My sister Rachel told me about Tyler while we were cleaning up after one of our family dinners.

Our family still gets together most weekends for a Vietnamese style meal. There is usually too much food, several conversations happening at once, and somebody packing leftovers before everyone has finished eating. Rachel had been quieter than usual that night, so I stayed behind after the others left.

Rachel is 42 and owns a nail salon in Biloxi. She has always been the responsible one in our family. She handles problems without asking for help, so I knew something serious was going on when she asked me to sit down.

She told me she had feelings for Tyler, 28 nail tech who worked at her salon. She said it had been going on quietly for a while and that they sometimes met after closing.

I did not know how to react.

The age difference was not what bothered me most. They were both adults. What worried me was that Rachel was his boss. She controlled his schedule, his station, and how many customers he received. Even if Tyler truly cared about her, the situation could become messy very quickly.

Rachel said she understood the risk. She also told me Tyler had been the one who first expressed interest. I had no way to know exactly how it started because I had only heard her side.

After she told me, I began noticing small things when I visited the salon. Tyler seemed to be the person Rachel asked whenever she needed help with closing. His schedule stayed steady even during slower weeks. Once, another nail tech made a comment about Tyler always getting the better walk-ins.

I could not tell if Rachel was actually favoring him or if I was only paying more attention because I knew their secret. Either way, it made me uncomfortable.

The hardest part was seeing Rachel at our weekend dinners acting completely normal. Everyone talked about business, family, and who was bringing food the next week. Nobody knew she might leave the salon late and meet one of her employees after the doors were locked.

A few weeks later, Rachel called me because Tyler had become upset about how carefully she acted around him at work. She said he felt like she treated him warmly in private and like a stranger inside the salon.

That was the moment I told her the relationship could not stay in the middle forever. If they were serious, they needed a plan that protected Tyler and the other employees. If they were not serious, meeting secretly after closing needed to stop before someone got hurt or the staff found out.

Rachel did not like hearing that. For several days, she barely responded to my messages.

Then she came to our next family dinner and helped our mother in the kitchen like she always did. Before leaving, she quietly told me that she and Tyler had agreed not to meet at the salon anymore. She did not say they had ended things.

I still do not know where their relationship is going. I only know I am the one person in our family who understands why Rachel sometimes checks her phone during dinner and then suddenly puts it away.
