Kevin asked me to protect a secret I never agreed to keep
Kevin’s wife brought their two children into the salon one Saturday, and Emily disappeared into the supply room before they reached the front desk. That was when I stopped pretending their relationship had nothing to do with me.

I’m a Vietnamese nail tech in Seattle, and I had worked beside Kevin for almost four years. We spoke Vietnamese together at work, shared lunch sometimes, and covered each other’s customers when one of us ran late. I knew his wife, Amy, and I knew they had children. He never acted like he was planning to leave his family.

Emily was the owner’s younger sister. She was single and came to the salon several times a week, usually to help with paperwork, bring food, or visit her sister. She and Kevin had always been friendly, but several months ago their behavior changed.

Kevin began volunteering to close whenever Emily stayed late. On slower afternoons, they would leave separately and return within a few minutes of each other. I did not know where they went, so I kept my suspicions to myself.

Then Kevin asked me to cover his last appointment one evening. He said he had an important family matter. While I was finishing his customer, I saw him get into Emily’s car behind the salon.

The next morning, I asked him why he had lied to me. Kevin did not deny anything. He told me he and Emily had been seeing each other privately for a few months. He said his marriage had been unhappy for a long time, but he was not ready to make any major decision because of his children.

I told him I did not want to be involved. Kevin said he only needed me to stay quiet. After that, however, staying quiet became more complicated. He started asking me to switch closing duties, move customers, and tell the owner he had left early for family reasons.

I refused twice, but I helped him once when the salon was busy and I did not want to create a scene. That one favor seemed to make him believe I had accepted the situation.

The Saturday Amy arrived, Emily and Kevin had been talking near the back hallway. Emily saw Amy through the front window and quickly went into the supply room. Kevin walked toward his family like nothing unusual had happened.

Amy smiled at me and asked if Kevin had been working too much lately because he seemed distracted at home. I felt embarrassed even though I was not the person having the affair. I gave her a vague answer and said the salon had been busy.

After Amy left, I told Kevin I would not lie for him again. Emily heard us and became upset with me. She said I was judging a situation I did not understand and warned me that her sister owned the salon.

That changed everything for me. Until then, I thought I was protecting Kevin’s private life. Once Emily mentioned her connection to the owner, it felt like my job had become part of the secret.

I spoke privately with the owner the next day, but I did not reveal the affair. I only told her that I would no longer change schedules or cover unexplained absences for Kevin. She looked confused, but she agreed.

Kevin has been distant with me since then. Emily barely speaks to me. I still have not told Amy or the owner what I know.

I am trying to stay out of their relationship, but I also know silence is helping them continue. Every time Amy comes into the salon, I wonder if staying quiet is really neutral anymore.
